The first thing you definitely need to do (if you haven’t already) is to include meta and title tags. HTML’s meta tag does not alter the content visible on the website; they exist only for search engines. Place a title tag at the top of EACH PAGE to identify the document’s overall content. Write an accurate meta description tag, since it is often used by search engines to describe a site in the search results.
The next step to optimise your website is to research the keywords you are thinking about using. You must remember to identify keywords related to your site’s content, you don’t want to be coming up for something completely irrelevant to your content after all! These can be popular search terms that will lead people to your website, words that are related to your overall topic & the topic of a specific page and/or blog post. Anyways back to how to optimise your website with step 3! And that is to place keywords strategically throughout your content. Having keyword rich content is the key to performing well within search engines. However, always remember that some search engines may penalise you for keyword spamming so always remember to:
• Use the keywords liberally on your home page
• Include keywords in header tags, title tags and meta tags
• Include keywords in the anchor text used to describe leads
• Use keywords in the URLs of new pages
We now move on to step 4 of how to optimise your website, using alt tags to describe each image. This will make them searchable by search engines, which cannot otherwise detect what is in your images. If you can, include a keyword or two in the descriptions, but also keep the description relevant.
We will now move on to step 5! KEEP PROVIDING NEW CONTENT! Good, new web content is a critical factor in keeping site visitors interested and coming back for more. This, in turn, will lead to higher search engine rankings, meaning more sales! Keep in mind when creating content, each page should have at least 250 words.
We will now press on to my 6th step in website optimisation, get other websites to link to your website. Building good quality links to your website can also increase your search engine ranking as well as website traffic, which in turn means MORE SALES! List your website in RELEVANT directories and forums, and ask websites on similar topics to link to content on your website. Most major search engines rank web pages based partially on the number as well as the quality of the links to your website, after all, there is no point in having irrelevant links to your website!
My 7th step on optimising your website is to create a sitemap. Sitemaps are files specifically XML files that list every single URL on your website. Your web host may provide this file, or you may have to make it yourself one thing is for sure though. Once every page is listed, upload it to the root folder of your web server & submit the link to this sitemap to Google and other search engines.
The 8th step I will take you through is to avoid using frames wherever possible. Frames which recently have been used less and less, enable you to split your website into different sections, the main reason that people do this is to decrease download times, sounds good right? You’d be wrong. Using frames can prevent search engines from accessing your entire website. This means that vital pages will be lost to the oblivion that is the 10th page of Google, or somewhere along those lines….
The final step of optimising your website is to validate your HTML code. Whilst search engines don’t care whether your code is error-free or not, they rely on the basic correctness of the code to find out which portions of the web page to index. If your HTML code contains errors, it is possible that only portions of your website are included in the search engine’s database. Use WC3 or another site to validate your HTML, checking it for errors.
